This glamorous fashion house started its life as an abandoned, derelict double-storey heritage building on Bree Street.
Budism Couture
The design balances preservation and innovation. Externally, the symmetrical Georgian façade was meticulously restored to retain its original character, while a lightweight zinc-roofed fourth storey was added – a modern intervention that respects the historic streetscape. Inside, a new concrete structure was inserted within the existing walls to support the vertical extension, allowing for an entirely new interior layout. The result is a seamless fusion of heritage architecture and modern craftsmanship.
The interior architecture and hard finishes blend classic contemporary style with understated luxury. A light, refined palette of pale plaster, honed stone and metal detailing enhances the sense of elegance, while the client’s curated furnishings and couture pieces add a fashion-forward energy. The sculptural, shell-like spiral staircase anchors the design – its sweeping concrete form enclosed by a bent steel balustrade, creating a sense of movement that mirrors the flow of fabric. This organic element contrasts with the rectilinear structure around it, embodying the creative tension between structure and artistry.
Every detail reflects collaboration and craft, from the Rheinzink roof chosen for its refined materiality to the bespoke wrought iron gate adorned with hand-forged metal flowers. The client was responsible for soft furnishings and artwork curation. The project thus became a dialogue between architecture, heritage and the art of couture – a celebration of transformation that redefines a historic space for contemporary creative expression.
Winner of Commercial Refurbishment of the Year at the 2024 Scape Awards, Budism Couture exemplifies Peerutin Karol’s approach to design – rooted in respect for context, material authenticity and the creation of spaces that tell a story of elegance, craft and renewal.
