Bringing art deco nostalgia and a playful colour palette to urban Woodstock, the 1 on Albert apartment block offers cosmopolitan living with easy access to the city and a streetside lifestyle component including a coffee shop and retail outlet. Our design for these micro-flats is part of the densification programme for Cape Town, distinguished and enlivened by use of coloured tiles on the façade.⁠

Inspired by the works of well-known American architects, the brief to us was to create an ‘iconic’ home that, while setting itself fundamentally apart from the surrounding built context, integrates and blends organically into the natural beauty of the site and surroundings.

We're extremely proud to announce the appointment of two new Directors at Peerutin Karol. Giovanni Pivetta and Henning van As, both longstanding associate architects, join the leadership team of our practice. Get to know them in a short Q&A.

Giovanni, what fascinates you most about architecture?

What captivates me about architecture is its inherent relationship with time. In an era characterised by rapid change and fleeting moments, architecture stands as a testament to permanence, making a bold statement that transcends time and endures for years, if not decades or centuries. The prospect of crafting something that resonates with generations beyond my own is profoundly awe-inspiring.

What is your philosophy in your approach to architecture?

Architects hold a powerful role in shaping our world, where they can lead change while respecting the environment. They not only consider cultural, environmental and technical aspects but also add value through a unique process involving a careful balance of creativity, practicality and sustainability, ensuring each design contributes to a better future for all.

Henning, what do you love most about your work with Peerutin Karol?

We are one of the few firms in SA to offer both exceptional design and strong management to clients. Too many architectural practices focus on design only, lacking the ability to effectively manage projects and complete them within budget and on time.

Our unofficial motto is “Passionate, but flexible”. In the end, we offer a service to the client, and therefore need to put design ego aside. What I like most is that we do not lose the passion to still provide the best design within these parameters.

How would you describe your philosophy in your approach to architecture?

As a designer I have a practical and intuitive response to project parameters, site placement and client needs. I believe a strong concept is essential to respond to all of these. With a strong concept to base your design on, you can consistently test your design development against this to make sure you are not straying away and diluting the overall architectural response.

This will become the gym and sauna of the luxury Bantry Bay home we’re working on, on Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard.
