Budism Couture Atelier

Cape Town, South Africa

Budism Couture, a luxury haute couture fashion house, commissioned us to transform a neglected Georgian-era building on Bree Street into a contemporary atelier, showroom and studio. Their brief called for a complete architectural reimagining that would respect the building’s heritage while creating a refined, fully functional home for their client-facing and production spaces.

Budism Couture Atelier

This project began with the careful restoration and reimagining of a neglected Georgian-era building in Cape Town’s historic Bree Street precinct. As one of the few remaining examples of its architectural period, the structure required a thoughtful balance between heritage sensitivity and contemporary innovation. Working closely with heritage authorities, we retained the historic façade and core fabric while inserting an entirely new internal concrete structure to support the building’s transformation into a fully functioning couture atelier.

Across four levels, the design supports Budism Couture’s complete workflow – from client-facing spaces to the atelier’s technical production floors and an upper-level entertainment suite. The ground floor serves as a refined showroom and fitting area, designed as the client’s primary point of engagement. Above, the first and second floors house the workrooms and studio spaces where garments are designed, patterned and hand-crafted. A lightweight new fourth floor, crowned with a Rheinzink roof, accommodates an elegant entertainment area that opens onto a terrace with views of Table Mountain and the city skyline.

A sculptural, shell-like concrete spiral staircase forms the architectural and conceptual centrepiece of the project. Its organic geometry contrasts intentionally with the rectilinear original structure, expressing the creative process at the heart of haute couture. This vertical anchor threads through all four levels, offering dynamic sightlines and becoming a defining architectural experience.

The street-facing façade remains a key heritage element, maintained and enhanced through meticulous detailing. A bespoke wrought-iron gate, crafted from individually forged metal flowers sourced internationally and assembled locally, anchors the entrance and sets the tone for the atelier experience. The design’s material character – from the new zinc-clad roof to the restored masonry and contemporary insertions – creates a dialogue between past and present, craft and modernity.
