Budism

This enchanting project started its life as an abandoned, derelict double-storey heritage building on Bree Street. Our client, Budism, an haute couture fashion design house, had a vision of creating a studio where they could meet their clients, entertain them, and create their beautiful garments.

The core idea of reviving this building was in creating a central shell-like spiral staircase, connecting all the floors. One enters on the ground floor, where clients have their fittings. The next two floors are for studios, where the dresses are hand-made. The top floor is an entertainment space under a new Rheinzink roof, spilling out onto a terrace overlooking the city and Table Mountain.

The façade which faces the bustling Bree Street was particularly important to the client, who wanted to recreate the feeling of walking into a world-renowned fashion house. The entrance incorporates a repurposed timber window frame containing a steel, glass and a bespoke iron gate, crafted with hand-made iron roses forged in the United States.
