The proposal aims to leverage vertical perspectives to challenge the visitor’s understanding of their context at Tili Vini Italy. Operating in tandem, is a balance of addition and subtraction to further frame the passage of time.
We chose to cut away landscapes and submerge private spaces, rendering the area’s past lives, heritage and make up close to the visitor. The ground plain in front the of old barn has been gently lifted around its edges and new Villas slotted underneath. These new villa elements are planted into the old Italian countryside to immerse occupants during their stay. The ground plain washes over the villas, creating a berm structure with a vantage point to see the surrounding views. The existing barn is cut into to reveal its internal makings to the exterior with a new building inserted through the bottom floor. Only two elements breach the 2nd floor, holding the visitor up above the site – by placing two arches above the datum line, we frame the context through a timeless motif.
Materials were chosen for their comparison with the heritage materials on site, using the processing time of materials to inform our application of such. Laminated wood and glass facades are used for their mark on contemporary construction, but the champion of materials is cork, for its excellent sustainability in the region as well its ability to render so similar to the masonry walls. Able to be to be generated affordably by the estate, a cork panel can be renewed over and over again if recycled correctly. Cork’s processing time runs parallel to wines, however a little slower. This ever-new element placed over, next to, and behind the sites existing construction to bring the passage of time into perspective with its elastic transformations.
